WEATHERWATCH COMMENT PUBLISHED SATURDAY 21ST MAY

* MEDIA 'HOTTEST SUMMER' SPECULATION *

You may have read in various newspapers, both national and local, speculating that the we are heading for the 'hottest summer' for over 100 years'. Please treat these stories with the contempt they deserve. There is no merit in them at all, and the source of them is not from the Met Office, or any other reputable Weather Forecasting organisation. They are sourced from one person, who has little or seemingly, no Meteorological knowledge. The articles are syndicated across the media, hence why they make their way all papers. The articles wiil use phrases like 'forecasters', 'expert(s)'. Believe me, it is not a 'forecaster', or an 'expert' with any proven track record of forecast accuracy dishing out this nonsense. Of course, we can expect some warm weather during the coming months, it will be Summer after all!! We may even have a hot spell or two, but no one can forecast with any great certainty for the next three months as to extent of any warm/hot spells, if indeed there will be any. The Met Office, the UK's official national forecaster produce a 3month guide for Contingency Planners, that gives indications/probabilities of Temperature and Rainfall, using a variety of data sources. It is NOT a forecast in the same way that a daily or weekly forecast is given. It states a range of probability of certain conditions over a range of time. The latest of these Contingency Forecasts can be found on the Met Office website here, or you can view the Temperature guide here, and the Rainfall guide here.
